Classic tented accommodation beside the Mara River.
Governors’ Camp is a long-established tented safari camp inside Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. Established in 1972, it occupies a wooded setting beside the Mara River, near Musiara Marsh.
Often called Governors’ Main Camp, it offers a traditional under-canvas stay, with accommodation overlooking the river or open plains. It is a separate property from Governors’ Il Moran Camp and Little Governors’ Camp.
We arrange flying safari packages to Governors’ Camp, coordinating your accommodation, flights, transfers, game-drive programme and applicable reserve admission. For most first visits, we recommend four days and three nights, with longer stays available.

Our Assessment of Governors’ Camp
Choose Governors’ Camp for its safari atmosphere and wildlife setting.
It suits travellers who enjoy sleeping under canvas and want their holiday to centre on game drives, the river landscape and time outdoors.
We would compare it with more contemporary camps according to what matters to you. Some guests prioritise private pools, elaborate suites or extensive facilities. Others prefer an established tented camp where accommodation supports a wildlife-focused holiday.
For a flying safari, your vehicle arrangements deserve particular attention. We explain whether drives are shared or private, who handles the guiding and what flexibility is included.
Best For
- First-time visitors seeking a classic tented safari.
- Couples interested in wildlife and the river landscape.
- Families requiring suitable tent arrangements.
- Guests considering northern reserve wildlife areas.
- Travellers who prefer flying to a lengthy road transfer.
Consider Another Property If…
- You want a private plunge pool or resort-style facilities.
- You prefer permanent lodge rooms.
- Your holiday must include conservancy night drives.
- You want accommodation specifically inside the Mara Triangle.
- Exclusive vehicle use is essential but unavailable in your selected offer.
Governors’ Camp Accommodation
The camp’s current accommodation information lists 24 tents: 19 luxury tents and five family tents. Each has an en-suite bathroom and private veranda.
Double and Twin Arrangements
Tell us whether you prefer a double bed or twin beds. Your quotation identifies the accommodation and occupancy being booked.
A particular tent or view remains a request until confirmed by the camp.
Family Tents
We compare available family arrangements using children’s ages and your preferred sleeping configuration.
Before booking, we confirm capacity, beds, applicable child charges and any restrictions. Photographs alone should not be used to establish whether a tent accommodates your whole party.
Meals and Drinks
Our proposals state the included meal plan and beverage selection.
The camp’s published arrangements include selected drinks, while premium beverages cost extra. Packed meals can support longer outings, and special dietary requirements should be raised in advance.
We make these details explicit in your quotation, including:
- Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
- Included drinks.
- Packed-meal arrangements.
- Optional bush meals.
- Additional charges for special requests.
Facilities and Time at Camp
Governors’ Camp has a bar and dining area, a spa tent, Wi-Fi and charging facilities. Its operator states that the camp runs on solar power.
We recommend leaving some time between outings to enjoy your accommodation.
If reliable charging, particular room access or other practical facilities are important, tell us before booking so we can check your requirements directly. Treatments and personal services are quoted separately where applicable.
Governors’ Camp Location
The camp is inside the National Reserve, rather than in an outside-gate accommodation area or neighbouring conservancy.
Its northern reserve setting should be considered alongside your intended wildlife areas. We help you compare the accommodation, driving programme and admission coverage together.
For your property map, use the actual camp location rather than a general “Governors’ collection” marker. Main Camp, Il Moran and Little Governors’ should have separate records.
Flying to Governors’ Camp from Nairobi
Our Governors’ Camp holidays begin with a scheduled flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to the appropriate Mara airstrip.
We coordinate the selected service with your arrival transfer and camp programme. Flight duration depends on routing and intermediate stops.
Before booking, we confirm:
- Departure airport and check-in requirements.
- Arrival airstrip.
- Flight timings.
- Baggage allowance and suitable bags.
- Return airstrip transfers.
- Any Nairobi transfers requested.
Wilson Airport is separate from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Share international flight details so we can assess your connection.

Governors’ Camp and the Great Migration
For a migration-focused visit, July–October is the usual Kenyan Mara planning window.
We consider your dates, accommodation base and available viewing time. Herd movements depend on rainfall and grazing, and river crossings can involve long waits or no crossing at all.
No camp or itinerary can guarantee a river crossing.
Three nights provide a useful starting point. Four or five nights allow more flexibility for longer outings, photography and time at camp.

We had the best experience. Everything was really great. We booked a tour from Nairobi to lake Nakuru and then to Masaai Mara and back to Nairobi. Our guide and driver Brian was very well educated and told us a lot about the animals and plants we were able to spot. He was also a very experienced driver. In the Mara we saw a lot of cars got stuck in the mudd because of the rain the day before. The camps the holiday dealers recommended us were great. The food was very delicious, the staff was very polite and the rooms were nice. We spotted a lot of different animals and of course the big five. Thanks to the Team of The holiday dealers - the whole trip was a unforgettable journey for our whole family.Posted on Google![]()

It is now over a decade since i started using The Holiday Dealers to plan my tours and travels. Not a single day have they disaspointed me. They have remained consistent and professional in their service delivery. Over the years, they have personaized my trips, to suit my needs and expectations of a perfect vacation. From sourcing for family based hotels like Voyager and Baobab resorts to romantic getaways like Finch Hattons Mahali Mzuri and Bluff lodges etc, the Holiday Dealers have no doubt mastered their craft. They will take you from the bush to the beach without breaking a sweat. Last festive season, Holiday Dealers successfuly planned my trip to Nothern and Central parts of Kenya. We were assigned a highly qualified, professional and well informed tour guide and driver who gave us limitless guided game drives of the breathtaking landscapes of Samburu. In particular we visited the Buffalo Springs National Reserve and Shaba Game Reserve. While there watch out for the Duom palm, grevy’s Zebra and the Orynx. We wound up our trip at the luxurious Fairmont Mt. Kenya Safari club. In the morning, we would wake up to perfect views of amazing sunrise from the top of Mt. Kenya. The location of the club is just perfect. We were also lucky to see the endangered mountain bongo, some Llamas and other animals at the animal orphanage.
